A Good Choice for a Kids' Metal Detector The PYLE PHMD1 Treasure Hunter 1000 Metal Detector is a top-selling starter model for the younger set, recommended for ages 6 and up, and I would say ages 6— 11 is a good rule of thumb. It is great for beginners, has an easy learning curve and is fun and easy to use. Easy assembly -- putting it together and adjusting the length of the shaft is a snap! Accurate sensitivity -- it is able to spot many different items below the surface, anywhere from about 5 inches to three feet underground. The learning curve is easy for determining the different types of pings emitted by the machine and what they each stand for. It won't take long to figure out what each sound means. It has discrimination control which reduces finding unwanted items like iron. You want more coins and rings and fewer nuts, bolts, and washers. There are only two knobs on the control panel, one for power/sensitivity and one for ruling out the stuff that's not valuable marked Eliminator. It may take a little time to figure out how to fine-tune the knobs to begin finding the items you really want to find. The coil is 6" 1/2" in diameter and is weather resistant, but not waterproof. Stick to the sand and grassy areas when using this unit and stay away from the water. The PYLE PHMD1 Treasure Hunter 1000 Metal Detector runs on 9-volt batteries, so be sure to have plenty on hand. It helps to turn the unit off while you are digging in the spot where the metal detector indicated that there could be hidden treasure. This helps to preserve battery life. Features
The PYLE PHMD1 Treasure Hunter 1000 Metal Detector has a compact, lightweight, ergonomic design. Nothing worse than saddling a youngster down with a heavy piece of equipment that is difficult to use. The grip is easy to get used to and quite comfortable. All in all, I really like this PYLE PHMD1 Treasure Hunter 1000 Metal Detector. It is a good bet for the younger set and clocking in at around only $50, it is easy on the pocketbook for the adults.
